cryotainer was recorded live in concert at oberhausen gasometer in november 2007 -- it was my first performance there, and in many respects it was a dream come true: a year or two after the abandoned gas tank had been converted into a huge arts and exhibition space, my french fellow colleagues of lightwave performed a concert there (based on their "mundus subterraneus" album), and i was bowled over, to say the least. i knew this was a place where i wanted to perform a concert myself, no matter the costs.
the concert was recorded using a stereo dummy head microphone to pick up the ambient sound of the venue (coughing and yelling included), and at home in the studio i assembled a stereo recording that was made up of both the ambient sound as well as the sound straight from the desk. listening to the music via headphones should give you an idea of the vast acoustic space.
oh, by the way, it was fairly cold inside the gasometer (it was november, after all). some people showed up wearing nothing but slippers and a jacket, believing it would be all heated inside -- they did actually believe i was kidding them when i told them to bring some hot tea and a blanket.
the bonus tracks from "living legacy" were available only briefly as a little thank-you sent around to friends and supporters who bought some music back in 2008. the music was created between 2007 and 2008, and it was submitted as a contribution to a film-scoring contest held by german keyboards magazine. "living legacy" was a rather clumsy cgi-based film made by some students, and they were looking for a soundtrack that would fit in -- ultimately, the submission "with the lovely flute motif" won. the textural sound design work i had created for "living legacy" eventually evolved into "cambrium - music for protozoa", premiered at bochum planetarium in december 2008.
i think you can still find that little flick somewhere on the internet (
www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsotQTOShIU) albeit its title might be a tad too commonplace to make it easy to track down.
enjoy.
