about

This is the very first take of what was later to become "Hi-Flyin´ Shiva" on Klaus´ "Shiva Connection" album. It was recorded at Klaus´ studio in December 1999 on a rather special day. Sometimes there are days which have a totally unsettling quality to them because a variety of things and factors come into play. This emotional emergency had been absorbed by the two of us and found its way into the recording. Funnily enough, I had visualised some Mellotron Violins and some abstract guitar stuff when Klaus played the raw version of this track to me for the first time. He had recorded the basic version of "Shiva Connection" shortly after his return from a brief stay in India in the autumn of 1999. Here, this version is exactly what I had had in mind - frighteningly close, I must admit - but Klaus felt that the emotional impact of this version was too much to handle so he decided to opt for the alternative second take which was a little less intense.
It should be pointed out that Klaus never liked the way I abused his beloved Gibson 335 with that infamous white EMS Synthi Hi-Fli (affectionately called "the toilet seat"). It was also run through an original tape-based Maestro Echoplex EP-3 in Sound On Sound mode - clearly audible in the fade-out of the track -, and a Roland RE-201 Space Echo which adds that lovely hiccup every 30 or so seconds. I always liked this version better so I finally included it in a slightly abridged edit.
And boy, there´s one thing you can take for granted: Klaus was so utterly happy when I finally sold my Synthi Hi-Fli to The Musical Box from Canada… no more unpredictable timbral assaults on his guitar playing, no more sonic ambushes laid on stage like I did in Essen in May 1999 (documented on "Shiva Connection") where I had his guitar deliver a brief speech in Martian (or throttle an ostrich, as some thought). And, alas, no more pushing the envelope, I dare say. On the other hand, I wouldn´t be playing a Yamaha CS80 and a Rhodes piano today, had I not sold the EMS. It was kind of bizarre on a guitar but absolutely useless on synthesisers and drum machines. The times change, and so do the instruments, I think.
