about

"The Ace of Space" is one of those great mystery tracks as we both have absolutely no recollection as to when exactly it was recorded. My guess is that we recorded it at Klaus´ studio in March or April 1999. At that time I obtained my ARP 2600 back from my tech who had done some major overhaul to it. In order to try it out - and possibly record some more sequencer backings for future shows and albums by "Cosmic Hoffmann´s Only Arsehole Band", as we jokingly called it - we got the tape rolling and improvised for more than forty minutes. A lot of the recording was flawed by heavy compression and distortion but this beautiful gem gives you an impression of what it could have become. Also, this type of sequencing is a lot closer to what I would usually do, very much unlike my sequencer backings Klaus decided to use for his Cosmic Hoffmann programme. I for one could never really warm up to those as I felt there was an obvious musical downbeat missing which made them difficult to use in a stage situation as Klaus would latch onto a different downbeat than me, making the music sound a bit out of sync. Klaus apparently liked them a lot, though.
